Birth Order Differences in Early Inputs and Outcomes∗

چکیده
We examine within-family differences in preand early postnatal investments as potential explanations for the “birth order effect” – significant differences in the educational and labor market outcomes across children of varying birth orders. Taking advantage of the rich information on in utero and early childhood conditions in the Children of the NLSY79, we find that, within the same household, siblings of higher birth order experience a lower reduction in cigarette usage during pregnancy, are breastfed less often, and experience less cognitive stimulation and emotional support at ages 0 to 1. Next, we test for the presence of birth order effects in early cognitive/non-cognitive test scores and educational attainment and examine whether these differences can be explained by variations in prenatal and early childhood inputs. While we do find a significant negative relationship between birth order and early test scores as well as educational attainment, these effects are robust to controlling for variations in early childhood factors. The Early Origins of Birth Order Differences in Children’s Outcomes and Parental Behavior∗
We document birth order differences in cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes and maternal behavior from birth to adolescence. In the Children of the NLSY79, children of higher birth order score lower on cognitive abilities as early as age 1. The gap increases until school entry, remaining statistically significant thereafter. Mothers take more risks during pregnancy, are less likely to breastfee...
متن کاملThe roles of birth inputs and outputs in predicting health, behaviour and test scores in early childhood.
The goal of this study is to address directly the predictive value of birth inputs and outputs, particularly birth weight, for measures of early childhood development in a simultaneous equations modelling framework. Strikingly, birth outputs have virtually no structural/causal effects on early childhood developmental outcomes, and only maternal smoking and drinking during pregnancy have some ef...

Advances in treating infertile couples by assisted reproductive technologies (ART) over more than three decades have greatly improved the chances of better outcomes. While twinning and higher order multiple birth rates are still high in most countries, lower rates have sometimes been achieved by single-embryo transfer. The critical role of prenatal and early childhood conditions on adult outcomes has been the focus of a rich body of research. In this paper, we examine various preand postnatal investments as possible sources behind the “birth order effect” – significant differences in the educational and labor market outcomes across children of varying birth orders. Taking advantage of a rich set of informatio...
متن کاملThe Roles of Birth Inputs and Outputs in Predicting Health, Behavior, and Test Scores in Early Childhood
The goal of this study is to address directly the predictive value of birth outputs, particularly birth weight. Specifically, in the context of four birth inputs (maternal smoking, drinking, prenatal care, and maternal weight gain during pregnancy), three birth outputs (gestational age, birth length, and birth weight), and 32 exogenous covariates observed during pregnancy, we investigate the ab...
